How to Stop Bad Breath Naturally

Stop bad breath now!Do you have bad breath? This can be an embarrassing problem if it isn't treated effectively. Follow these steps!

Good Habits: To avoid bad breath you must practice good hygiene habits meaning brush and floss at least twice a day.

  2. Step2

Keep your Tongue Clean: When brushing your teeth, don't forget to brush your tongue. Try investing in a tongue scrapper to stop bad breath.

  3. Step3

Eat Vegetables: Eating vegetables such as carrots, apples and celery will clean your tongue. The rough texture of these vegetables will give your tongue just the cleaning it needs to fight bad breath bacteria.

  4. Step4

Drink Tea: Drinking tea can slow the growth of bad breath bacteria. The compounds in the tea work as a wall to block the bacteria.

  5. Step5

  6. Step6

Eat Parsley: Eating parsley will almost certainly clear up your case of bad breath. It's stocked with tons of chlorophyll which will give off a fresh smell.

How to Get Whiter Teeth

If your pearly whites, well, aren't--blame it on caffeine, candy, prescription drugs or aging, all of which dull the gleam. Whiten and brighten dingy teeth with high-tech treatments in your dentist's office or over-the-counter bleaches you use at home. Here's how to bring that sparkle back.

  1. Step1

Ask your dentist if you're a good candidate for whitening, since results can vary. Yellowed teeth generally lighten well; darkened grayish or brownish teeth may not.

  2. Step2

Try over-the-counter products, which have low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. A dental tray and gel kit can be used for a short time each day to lighten teeth one to two shades in two weeks, at best. Whitening strips cover the six front teeth--which must be even--for similar results, and keep peroxide on teeth and off gums. Paint-on gels get similar results and cover more teeth, but can be messy to use. Hydrogen peroxide works faster than carbamide (see Step 3), but takes longer to get results and deactivates faster. These are the least-expensive treatments to use when staining reoccurs due to beverages and smoking.

  3. Step3

Use a dentist-made tray at home twice daily for an hour for a couple of weeks, or wear it overnight. The gel's active ingredient is 10, 15 or 20 percent carbamide peroxide, which is gentler than hydrogen peroxide. Teeth could lighten several shades depending on the strength of the gel used. Higher percentages work faster but also increase the chance of teeth sensitivity. Ask your dentist for whitening products that include fluoride to reduce sensitivity. Cost: $300 to $450.

  4. Step4

Whiten your teeth by up to 10 shades in one 60- to 90-minute session with a potent, light-activated bleaching formula of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide. Cost: $500 to $1,100.

  5. Step5

Consider porcelain veneers or bonding if you have conditions where bleaching isn't effective, such as tetracycline or intrinsic staining. Bonding is a resin that's contoured over teeth. Veneers are thin porcelain manufactured in a laboratory. Cost: $500 to $1,500 per tooth for porcelain veneers, $150 to $300 for bonding.

  6. Step6

Keep in mind that two to three weeks of whitening by over-the-counter products equals one week of overnight tray treatment from the dentist--and may well equal one hour of the light-activated treatments

How to Temporarily Replace a Tooth Filling

Fear not. You can temporarily fill a tooth or hold a dislodged crown in place for up to a couple of weeks.

  1. Step1

Look for the early signs of having lost a filling or dislodged a crown: pain when cold air, food, liquids or your tongue touch the tender area.

  2. Step2

Wash your hands thoroughly with antiseptic soap.

  3. Step3

Put on latex gloves if you are treating someone other than yourself.

  4. Step4

Prepare a mixture to use as temporary filling if you do not have a premixed temporary filling compound from your dentist. A standard mixture available with some first aidkits is a mix of zinc oxide powder and oil of cloves, but you can improvise by rolling a ball of sugarless gum, ski wax or candle wax.

  5. Step5

Rinse the mouth thoroughly with disinfected water.

  6. Step6

Apply a drop of oil of cloves (also known as "eugenol") to the hole in the mouth. This will reduce the pain.

  7. Step7

Roll the temporary filling into a small ball and place the ball gently into the exposed area, making certain to cover any exposed tissue.

  8. Step8

Bite down, lining the tooth up with the tooth above or below it.

  9. Step9

Wait for the filling to harden if you are using a premixed filling or a mixture of zinc oxide powder and oil of cloves.

  10. Step10

Evacuate immediately and see a dentist.

How to Gargle

Gargling is a great way to kill bacteria in your mouth. It also helps to give you fresher breath.

  1. Step1

Buy mint-flavored mouthwash, the flavor that's usually preferable for someone feeling ill. Opt for other flavors or salt water if you like.

  2. Step2

Pour the mouthwash into a clean glass or paper cup. If you pour it into the cup attached to the top, you'll run the risk of contamination, especially if you share the bottle with others. If you prefer to gargle with salt water, dissolve 1 /2 tsp. in 8 oz. of warm water.

  3. Step3

Slide the mouthwash quickly over your tongue.

  4. Step4

Throw your head back and stop the mouthwash right before it hits your epiglottis (the cartilaginous flap in the back of your throat). You'll know the mouthwash is resting in the right spot if you feel as if you're going to gag or swallow.

  5. Step5

Make the mouthwash bubble and gurgle for at least 45 seconds. Pull your tongue back a little and blow air through your throat slowly. Be sure to keep your head way back, and remember to keep the mouthwash right in front of your epiglottis. That's where the germs are sitting, far back and out of sight. Try not to swallow any of the mouthwash.

  6. Step6

Drop your head back down and spit the mouthwash out.

  7. Step7

    Repeat

How to Care for a Toothache

Common toothache symptoms include throbbing pain around a certain tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold foods, and discomfort when chewing. Causes can vary from cavities and gum disease to cracked teeth and exposed tooth roots. These first-aid measures will help.

  1. Step1

Clean your mouth by rinsing it with warm water.

  2. Step2

Floss gently around the sensitive tooth to dislodge any food particles.

  3. Step3

Try placing an ice pack on your jaw to soothe the pain.

  4. Step4

Use over-the-counter painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve pain.

  5. Step5

Call your dentist if you have a fever or if the pain worsens or lasts for more than a day. He or she will ask you questions to determine the urgency of your need for treatment.

  6. Toothache Pain Irritated by a Cold

  7. Toothaches are no fun. And when you have a toothache, it seems that anything you put in your mouth worsens the pain--like certain foods, certain beverages or even just cold air. One thing that makes toothaches hurt even worse is having a cold or sinus infection. The pain can get pretty close to unbearable, and you should really see a dentist. But if you want to treat a cold-irritated toothache on your own, you can use some simple home remedies.
    1. Step1

Take some cold and sinus medicine like Tylenol PM or Dayquil. You'll be more likely to cure your cold than you will a toothache. This won't take away all of the toothache pain, but reducing the cold that is irritating your teeth will surely help.

    2. Step2

Wet a tea bag. Don't get it sopping and dripping wet, but run it under some warm water. Open your mouth and place it on the teeth that are aching from a cold. You can put a little pressure on the teeth, but make sure you don't break the tea bag open; it won't taste good, and the tea grains won't be easy to get out of your mouth.

    3. Step3

Mix a small amount of hydrogen peroxide with a good bit of water. Don't swallow it, as It can potentially be dangerous. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 to 45 seconds. Do this over a period of a few days, after each meal or three times a day. This will help get rid of the infection.

    4. Step4

Use numbing gel made for toothache pain irritated by colds. Spray some sore-throat spray in your mouth, in the vicinity of the tooth that hurts. It will numb your gums and help ease the pain. Numbing spray will also help to clear your sinuses and suppress the pain of a sore throat. Spreading numbing gel around and on your tooth and gumline will also help temporarily alleviate the pain.

    5. Step5

Use a humidifier in your home or inhale the steam from hot water. Don't stick your face directly into the water, though, because if it is too hot, the steam will be hot as well, and will hurt. But ingesting warm air will soothe your mouth, as well as your throat and nasal passages. It can help ease tooth pain and help kill the infection from your cold.

How to Whiten Your Teeth

Whiten Your TeethTobacco, coffee, cavities, aging and drugs can stain teeth. Treatment for discolored teeth depends on the magnitude of the stain; remedies appear here in order of increasing intensity.

  1. Step1

Brush and floss regularly to reduce or prevent stains.

  2. Step2

Try whitening toothpastes. Though heavily advertised, these only partially whiten teeth and don't provide a complete remedy. Make sure the toothpaste has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval and has been clinically proved to whiten teeth effectively. Very few whitening toothpastes have undergone any type of clinical trial, and ones that are too abrasive can damage teeth or make them very sensitive.

  3. Step3

Get regular dental cleanings, which remove many food and tobacco stains. No amount of cleaning will remove the severe staining left by tetracycline or systemic disease because these pigments lie inside the tooth; you'll have to take more aggressive measures against these.

  4. Step4

Consider the two options, in-office and at-home treatments, for bleaching your teeth. A dentist performs in-office treatments by coating the teeth with a bleaching agent, then using periodic flashes of light to activate the solution. Treatments last 30 to 60 minutes, and the complete procedure often requires several appointments. In at-home treatments, patients wear a mouth guard fitted with bleaching gel 2 hours a day for two weeks, depending on the severity of staining.

  5. Step5

Think about getting veneers, which are custom-made shells bonded to the teeth with resins. This procedure often requires removing a small amount of tooth structure and is the most invasive, as well as the most expensive, treatment option
